The excitation of the diatomic carbon molecule in interstellar clouds is discussed with attention to the probabilities for the radiative and collision al excitation processes. The rotational temperature is computed to be generally higher than the kinetic temperature, as is found in existing interstellar absorption line observations of C2. The rotational populations can be used as a diagnostic probe of local temperature, density and strength of the radiation field, although all three parameters cannot usually be extracted from C2 data. An unusual radio frequency spectrum of C2 is predicted. The abundances of C2 and C2H in the interstellar cloud are discussed and brightness temperatures for C2H in this cloud are computed.
