The recent availability of sensitive heterodyne detectors in the submillimetre spectral region (300-1000 GHz) and large aperture optical infrared telescopes at high altitude observatories have led to sensitive astronomical observations of a number of molecular species in galactic star formation regions. The current state of progress in this newly developing field is examined both with regard to present day detectors and also astrophysical applications.
