The velocity field in the isolated SA(s)cd spiral NGC 6503 at an estimated distance Δ ≍ 7.0 Mpc is derived from 836 velocities measured on nine Hα interferograms taken with the Galaxymeter attached to the 205 cm reflector at McDonald Observatory.
Isovelocity maps at 5" and 7" resolution are presented. Analysis of the velocity field gives the inclination i = 67°.3 and the position angle of the line of nodes θ0 = 121°.06, both in excellent agreement with the photometric determinations. The center of rotation coincides within measuring errors with the optical nucleus, and the systemic heliocentric velocity is VS = 26±3 km s-1,in good agreement with the H I line observations of Shostak, Willis, and Crane. The maximum rotational velocity VM = 108 km s-1 agrees with the observed low-resolution H I line data, but not with deconvolved values.
The masses estimated by fitting the observed rotation curve to various classical mass distribution models are in the range 0.9 < MT < 4.4 × 1010 solar masses. A more realistic three-component model, based on a photometric decomposition of luminosity profiles measured by Bertola and Bernacca, has a total mass MT = l.9 × 1010 solar masses of which ∼0.3% is in a very small spheroidal component, 91% in an old disk (exponential) component, and the balance in the young arm component. The mass-ratio, corrected for extinction, is MT/ LT(B)=3.0.
A comparison of the photometric and dynamical elements of M33, NGC 6503, and NGC 7793 demonstrates their close similarity and confirms the Scd classification.
A combined catalog of 125 H II regions, of which 61 are in common with Hodge, is given in an appendix.
