The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) was
established by the IAU and the IUGG in 1987. A short outline of its history,
its services to the astronomical, geodetic and geophysical communities and of
its future prospects is given. Special emphasis is made on IERS' relation to
astronomy.
