The infrared to radio range is the best suited to follow the early evolution of star forming regions, from cold dense cores to protostars. Galactic star formation activity is strikingly prominent and peculiar in the inner Galactic bulge, or Central Molecular Zone (CMZ, |l| ≤ 1.5°, |b| ≤ 0.5°) as shown by radio emission from giant molecular clouds and diffuse infrared emission from warm dust. Here we show how the recent star formation rate in this region can be roughly derived from the ISOGAL and MSX large scale mid-infrared surveys. We then show preliminary results from a Spitzer follow-up program; we finally briefly describe complementary projects that will make use of future facilities (APEX, Herschel, and ALMA).
