The magnetic wind controlled evolution of a close late-type binary should accelerate until a contact system is formed but then should slow down because of the shrinkage of the system and the implied decrease in the mass loss which leads to a drop in the angular momentum loss efficiency. This effect might explain the rarity of late-type binaries with periods 0.5-2.0 days and might also contribute to the observed preference for marginal contact.
