Main-Sequence Stars, Circumstellar Disks

Scientific paper

Debris-disks around main sequence stars are important fossils left from the planetary formation processes. They provide information on these processes and are signposts for long orbital period planets. Herschel/PACS in the Far-IR and ALMA in the submillimeter are complementary instruments to conduct a census of debris-disks as deep as 10-2 lunar mass or better of their dust content in the solar vicinity. This is an improvement of about two orders of magnitude over our present capabilities. The Far IR and submillimeter parts of the spectrum are uniquely suited to search for cold dust in debris-disks around low-mass M-dwarfs that are the most numerous stars.
