A method is proposed to determine constraints on magnetic fields (and densities) in coronal layers above solar active regions. The method is based on the interpretation of the radio emission as due to the interaction between wave modes (coupling). The first part of this paper is devoted to the study of mode coupling effects on the wave polarization. Then a theory is presented, that allows to deduce intrinsic physical quantities directly from radio maps during an observation of a polarization inversion. Unlike the standard methods, no assumption is needed on the emission mechanisms, and the information is 'local', i.e. not integrated along the line of sight.
