The Geneva-Copenhagen Survey of the Solar Neighbourhood provides accurate age, metallicity, kinematic, and duplicity information for a complete, unbiased, magnitude-limited sample of ˜14 000 nearby F and G dwarfs, volume limited to ˜40 pc. The results challenge traditional models of the evolution of the disc. We discuss the basis for these conclusions and outline the improvements needed to make further progress on the subject, especially as regards the determination of stellar ages and Galactic orbits.
