Reversible hydrothermal experiments have allowed the unequivocal determination of the p - t dependence of the LiAlSiO 4(willemite) /ag LiAlSiO 4(high-quartz) reaction. This constitutes one of the few reconstructive phase changes so studied. The revised - inversion temperature at atmospheric pressure is set at 848 ± 5°C and the enthalpy of inversion is calculated as 3750 cal/mole LiAlSiO 4 . It was found impossible to study the - spodumene inversion, since in no case could -spodumene be synthesized from its own composition at pressures up to 4000 atm. The assemblage -eucryptite + petalite appeared consistently instead.
