The proposal is to obtain wide field snapshot images of nearby galaxies in Paschen Alpha which is inaccessible from the ground. The observations use NICMOS Camera 3 and are to provide a scientifically useful means to fill schedule gaps during the NIC3 campaign. The data will be made publically available. The central regions of most spiral galaxies are heavily obscured making them inaccessible at visible wavelengths. IR observations using HST are essential to locate obscured gas disks around galactic nuclei. Such gas disks have been found in a number of elliptical galaxies with HST and have been used to probe the existence of black holes. Quiescent galaxies need to be observed because because jets from AGN disrupt the gaseous environment close to the nuclei. On the larger scale accessible to NIC3, it is important to relate the gas distribution to the galaxy potential because this gives information on the evolution of the galaxies via mergers and other non-axisymmetric perturbations.
