We propose to conduct a snap-shot broad-band imaging survey at 1.6Mum of a sample of early-type galaxies. Since almost all early-type galaxies harbor dust, these images which are less sensitive to extinction will provide superior light profiles for dynamical studies of the cores of these galaxies. Our sample is representative of early-type galaxies in the Revised Shapley-Ames catalogue in terms of dust mass distribution. 75 of 80 of the galaxies in this sample have been observed with WFPC so large wavelength baseline optical to IR color maps of their cores can be made. These images and color maps should be valuable for studies of stellar population gradients, and formation scenarios of early-type galaxies. By determining extinction-free stellar profiles these data will also test models for core formation. These data will allow comparision of the distribution of interstellar material and the variation in the stellar population between quiescent and active galaxies, and between galaxies with and without kinematically distinct cores.
