Mode 1.3 and 2.3 echelle spectra will be obtained for Xi Boo A and 61 Vir, a matched pair of active and inactive G8V stars. Differences in the detailed spectra of these stars will be used to explore how nonradiative heating affects the thermodynamic structure of the upper photosphere, chromosphere, and transition region. We also hope to use the continuum flux as a function of wavelength to constrain the filling factor of hot and cold components at various levels in the atmosphere. Finally, line shapes and shifts will provide information about turbulence and bulk flows throughout the atmosphere. These data will be compared with spatially-resolved spectra of active and quiet solar features recorded at wavelengths between 110 nm and 160 nm with the SUMER instrument on SOHO.
