The solar blind and long slit capabilities of STIS will be used to investigate the population of hot stars in galaxies. Imaging of galaxies with WFPC2 has indicated the presence of knots of blue stars in many galaxies. It has been suggested that these knots may be young globular clusters. Images of the galaxies in our sample in the ultraviolet and visible bands will determine whether such knots are present. Since many of the galaxies are known to be strong emitters in the ultraviolet, it is likely they contain populations of hot, young stars. The imaging will be used to identify the location and strength of these knots. We will then select a slit orientation or orientations for STIS to obtain ultraviolet spectra of as many knots as possible, to determine the characteristics of the objects in these regions. The sample is selected to study the characteristics of such stellar knots in a variety of environments. Parallel observations of the galaxy group NGC 3991/4/5 will be obtained to investigate further the stellar population in the galaxies. Parallel observations around the galaxies will search for young star clusters or faint companions which may have stimulated the starburst activity.
