The distances to dwarf novae are poorly known. This deficiency severely impacts our ability to quantify the energetics of the various processes taking place in dwarf nova systems. We propose a modest program using the Fine Guidance Sensors {FGS} on the HST to determine the parallaxes of three of the best known dwarf novae {SS Cyg, U Gem, and SS Aur}. Currently, the distances to these three objects are only known to within a factor of ≈ 2. We show that the positional accuracy achievable by the FGS will result in distances to these three objects good to pm10%. Such precise distances will allow us to accurately calibrate the luminosities of these systems, to quantify the accretion rate, and allow us to derive information about the structure of the accretion disk. Accurate distances will also allow us to calibrate secondary distance determination techniques {such as the technique of infrared spectroscopic parallax}. To begin this program, we have been awarded 12 orbits in Cycle 6. The Cycle 6 TAC approved future {Cycle 7} time to complete our program. Here we formally request these six orbits to finish our project.
