We propose to improve with NICMOS the description of the orbits and spectral distributions of the very-low-mass components of the LHS 1070 triple system initiated during HST cycle 5 with the FOS. We also propose to obtain the same type of NICMOS observations for the optically well studied dM8 V star VB 10, to allow a differential study with this very similar single object. LHS 1070 can only be resolved from space and is one of only two systems comprising stars immediately at the hydrogen burning limit for which masses can be dynamically determined. WFPC2 photometry and FOS spectra acquired during HST cycle 5 revealed {1} absolute brightnesses corresponding to theoretical masses of 0.078-0.088 and 0.075- -0.085 Msun for the faint pair depending on their age and metallicity, and {2} a saturation of the optical TiO absorption bands. Additional near-infrared spectra are essential to a determination of their effective temperatures and metallicity. Accurate stellar parameters for the LHS 1070 system will provide a unique opportunity to better determine the poorly understood transition region between low mass stars and brown dwarfs, while yielding solid constraints for stellar models.
