We propose deep imaging with STIS of a portion of the Hubble Deep Field {HDF} in the near and far ultraviolet using STIS. Through identification of the Lyman break at redshifts 1.6 < z < 3.5, the near-UV images will provide an important new probe of the star-forming history of the universe. The observations will extend the searches for Lyman break galaxies to B 29, two magnitudes fainter than possible with the existing HDF data and more than four magnitudes fainter than the current limit of ground-based spectroscopy. The far-UV images will allow identification of the Lyman break in galaxies at still lower redshifts, with a limiting magnitude {B = 27}, still significantly fainter than ground-based limits. In addition to providing redshift constraints, the measurement of the Lyman break in these nearer galaxies, where the IGM contribution to the Lyman-continuum opacity is negligible, will constrain the possible contribution of ionizing radiation from star-forming galaxies to the metagalactic flux. The STIS images will also provide valuable information on the UV morphologies, counts, and spectral energy distributions of faint galaxies. As the data are likely to be of wide interest, we will make the data available to the community as soon as they are reduced; we request a short proprietary period of 3 months to complete the data reduction.
