A conspicuous feature known as the mini-cavity appears as a hole in the distribution of ionized gas within a few arcseconds of the dynamical center of the Galaxy. The mini-cavity is distinguished from the rest of the ionized gas in this region by its high [FeIII] abundance and unusual kinematics. We propose narrow band observations using NICMOS Cameras 1 and 3 to image forbidden iron [FeII] emission from this remarkable region. We intend to test the model in which the mini-cavity results from a fast wind originating within the IRS 16 complex, and which is subsequently focused gravitationally by the hypothesized massive black hole coincident with neutral gas {the "mini-spiral"} orbiting the Galactic center. The orbiting gas is shocked, compressed and the dust grains within it are destroyed to enhance the gas phase abundance in the mini-cavity. We believe the proposed observation bears strongly on the formation of the mini-cavity and provides a powerful clue as to the source and nature of the activity in the Galactic center. The [FeII] observations will improve on ground-based observations in spatial resolution, sensitivity, and spatial coverage. They will extend from the mini-cavity region and to the Northern Arm region using Camera 3. Camera 1 observations will look for small scale spatial structure in the shock of the mini-cavity and comparisons with radio maps will be made possible via an image of the Pa Alpha line in the region coincident with the mini-cavity.
