Molecular hydrogen H_2 emits strong near-infrared line emission, even in some filaments and small, neutral condensations that are associated with ionized nebulae. Narrow-band imaging in H_2, together with images in nebular lines such as [Fe II] and H I α, will help to reveal the structure of molecular filaments and condensations. We propose to observe the filaments of the Crab Nebula in which H_2 has been identified Graham, Wright & Longmore 1990. The origin and evolution of the molecular gas in the Crab Nebula is still poorly understood. These neutral filaments are associated with much more extensive and intense [Fe II] emission. The angular resolution of NICMOS should be adequate to resolve the H_2 core of the filaments and to reveal the stratification of neutral and ionized gas. We propose a series of narrow-band images in H_2 and [Fe II] of both filaments, FK6 and FK10 Fesen & Kirshner 1982. Images in He I F108N/F113N will also be of interest. Parallel observations with the other NICMOS cameras will yield valuable information on line emission and polarization at other selected positions in/near these filaments. IR images in H_2, H I α, and [Fe II] at high resolution of the deeply buried ultracompact H II region G34.3+0.2 will identify its central stars, and reveal its morphology. The supernova remnant IC 443 provides one of the best examples of a strong shock driven into a molecular cloud: we will image the H_2 line at 2 positions. We will also image NGC 2023 in H_2.
