Scientific paper

This is a proposed ERO. HST WFPC2 images of the Eagle Nebula {NGC 6611} reveal the presence of a population of dense globules that have been uncovered as their surroundings are photoevaporated. The WFPC2 images, together with groundbased IR work, establish a relationship between these objects and ongoing star formation. It appears as though the EGGs may be uncovered while the stars within them are still acretting, which means that we are seeing the process responsible for setting the masses of these stars. In this proposal we obtain NICMOS images of parts of this region. Groundbased IR images suggest that about 10% of EGGs have associated stellar sources. However, these results are complicted both by the sensitivity of the groundbased observations and by the degree of confusion in the field. NICMOS images in three bands will not only allow us to conduct a better census of stellar objects in the field, but will also allow the objects to be placed on the H-R diagram and their evolutionary state to be assessed. In addition we will obtain a deep image of the field in molecular hydrogen emission. This will be crucial in extending the WFPC2 observations of the structure of the photoionization front deeper into the interior of the cloud. Finally, we note that this program, in addition to providing a nice image and good scientific results, this ERO program will demonstrate for the public the complementary nature of the different HST instruments.
