Two examples of Martian extensional tectonics are described. The normal fault network in the Alba Patera region extends over several hundred kilometers in length, and it consists of several systems of large faults bounding grabens which are 1-2 km deep. Two systems, one oriented N-S and one oriented N-NE/S-SW, are noted in this region. The equatorial canyon in the Valles Marineris is over 500 k long and it is aligned on a system of E-W normal faults. The floor of a large depression found in its central part is occupied by large deposits of detritic materials, suggesting previous erosion by running water. The presence of circular or ovoid depressions aligned with the E/W faults indicate that outgassing or sapping processes may have ocurred along the fault planes, causing the break-up of the canyons.
