The possibility that the secondary stars of cataclysmic variables (CVs) might be in non-synchronous rotation has recently been raised by van Paradijs. Here the authors consider the secular evolution of CVs under this assumption. They show that the resulting distribution of CV accretion rates with orbital period is in conflict with observation, and that currently favoured explanations of the CV period gap between 3 and 2 hr orbital period would have to be abandoned if there were any significant degree of asynchronism.
