Calculations show that, during magnetospheric disturbances when the zonal component of the electric field strength changes its direction from westward to eastward, the vertical structure of the nighttime equatorial E-region experiences an abrupt change. Of particular note is the formation of a deep trough of electron density in the lower E-region.
