An energy identity is obtained which makes possible a new approach to the problem of calculating Joule dissipation (JD) during current spreading in the ionosphere. The full value of the dissipation is represented by a scalar product in the sense of the Hilbert space of the radial component of the field-aligned current and the potential. In a subdomain without field-aligned currents, the JD is determined by the integral of the product of the normal component of the horizontal current and the boundary potential.
