It is shown by theory and a relativistic, electromagnetic particle simulation that strong ion acceleration occurs in a fast magnetosonic shock wave; the maximum speed of trapped ions can be about (mi/me)1/2 times as large as the Alfvén speed in a quasiperpendicular shock. The acceleration takes place even in laminar shock waves. The magnitude of the acceleration increases with ωce/ωpe and is enhanced by finite beta effects. For a parameter regime ωce/ωpe ⪆ 1, highly relativistic ions and electrons are produced simultaneously in the shock ramp. The structure of a nonlinear slow wave and associated resonant ion acceleration is also discussed.
