Linear collisionless kinetic theory of merging instability of magnetic islands in the plasma current layer with strong longitudinal magnetic field (i.e., along the equilibrium current) is presented. The growth rate of the instability turns out to increase with the growth of the island width and is inversely proportional to the longitudinal field. It is shown that the explosive growth of magnetic islands takes place on the stage of merging. These facts are in qualitative agreement with MHD theories and numerical simulation results.
