Spectroheliographs at Meudon Observatory are described, along with data obtained with them and other historical observations dating back to Galileo, and to the present understanding of solar dynamics. Attention is given to processes which transport energy from the 15 million C solar core to the 6000 C surface, to variations in the physical characteristics of the sun, and to physical manifestations of the 22 yr solar magnetic cycle. Emphasis is placed on investigations into the nonuniform rotation of the sun and into convective phenomena; techniques used to explore the phenomena are described, including seismology, spectroheliography of sunspots and H-alpha emissions, and by studying historical variations in solar output by C-14 analyses of glacial deposits and petrified trees.
