Leo A is a nearby (d=690 kpc), very low metallicity (~ 3% solar) isolated dwarf irregular galaxy which is gas rich and forming stars at the present time. Analysis of the evolved stellar populations in HST observations suggest that Leo A is a predominantly young galaxy (~1.5 Gyr old). The presence of a ``young'' galaxy in the Local Group would provide support for models of delayed dwarf galaxy formation and establish a link between galaxies like Leo A and the bursting faint blue galaxy populations at redshifts of 0.3 - 1. Wide-field WIYN Mini- Mo observations to conduct a census of the RR Lyraes in Leo A will allow us to test our derived star formation history. The presence or absence of a horizontal branch is a strong SFH constraint, and, given the photometric confusion from stars of intermediate age, observations of RR Lyraes provide the most secure method for identifying the horizontal branch. Combining the many images taken in two bands will allow the construction of a very deep color-magnitude diagram, which will further constrain the old stellar population. A comparison of the distances derived from the different variable stars and the TRGB method will allow a test of metallicity dependences.
