There has been much recent work to disentangle age and metallicity in old (> 10 Gyr) stellar populations such as globular clusters. However, significantly less study has been devoted to intermediate age (1-10 Gyr) populations, which play an important role in the evolution of many galaxies. For example, we do not currently understand the mechanism(s) responsible for the observed multimodal peaks in color distributions of elliptical galaxy globular cluster systems. Age and metallicity are the primary suspects, but disentangling these parameters in the integrated light of stellar populations older than a few Gyrs has proven difficult. For a new perspective on this old problem, we propose to obtain integrated optical spectra of ~40 Magellanic Cloud star clusters with ages between 1 and 10 Gyr in order to derive empirical calibrations of the strengths of absorption features with age and metallicity. All target ``populous'' clusters have recent age and metallicity determinations from resolved color magnitude diagrams, many with HST. We will determine the best age and metallicity indicators in the wavelength region 3900-5500Å, and test the effects of resolution on our calibration. Our immediate goal is to apply these calibrations to WIYN spectra of old and intermediate age M33 clusters to determine their parameters and reconstruct the history of this galaxy. However our derived relations will have a large number of practical applications in understanding fundamental questions concerning integrated stellar populations.
