The response of the middle atmosphere to solar activity oscillations with periods aorund 27 d (solar rotation) and 13 d is discussed using coherence estimates as derived from time series of the solar 10.7 cm radiation and of various atmospheric measurements covering the height range between about 30 and 120 km. The vertical structure of the response gives evidence that solar forcing via the ozone layer plays a role in the generation of atmospheric perturbations at the periods under consideration. On the other hand, the latitudinal structure of the possibly solar-induced oscillations shows that the global response to solar activity is essentially determined by the dynamical properties of the middle atmosphere leading to strongest perturbations at middle and higher latitudes.
