The quasi-static thermal structure of arches or loops in the solar corona is investigated analytically, integrating the classical HD equations numerically along the magnetic-field lines and taking the effect of the transition region joining the arches to the chromosphere into account. Expressions for determining the mechanical heating rate and summit temperature from the footpoint chromospheric density and the loop length are obtained, and the implications of a solution with a cold dense mass sheet at the arcade summit are explored.
