Polarization observations of a sample of late-type variable stars are reported. These data comprise detailed spectropolarimetry, obtained with a CCD instrument, from 3700-5800 A with a spectral resolution of about 20 A. In general, a complex polarization structure, as a function of wavelength, was found in all the objects. A remarkable feature of the Mira-type variables included in the survey is that some, but not all, showed enhanced linear polarization in the Ca I 4226-A resonance line; several stars also showed different position angles across this line compared to the nearby continuum. It is concluded that the Ca I polarization effect is analogous to that observed in the sun, and that the TiO molecule is an effective scatterer. Furthermore, it is argued that all these effects imply more than one polarigenic mechanism, and that both photospheric and circumstellar processes are important. These results emphasize the great need for polarization to be included in late-type stellar atmosphere models.
