A technique for determining the radial velocity of chromospheric structures from the intensity of the Na I D1 and D2 emission lines is described. This technique is used to analyze observations of chromospheric Na I D lines observed at a height of about 1500 km above the photosphere. It is found that the chromospheric structures seen in the D lines are not spicules in the traditional sense, but rather horizontal filamentary structures oriented along the line of sight. The optical depth of an 'elementary' filament (lengthwise) is estimated to be near unity at the D1 line center, and a characteristic forward velocity of about 6 km/s is obtained for material moving along a filament axis. A microturbulent velocity of 6-7 km/s within a filament is determined.
