Photospheric flows in a binary component whose surface is heated nonuniformly by radiation from its companion are examined. It is shown that mass circulation with velocities close to the speed of sound will occur in selected regions of the photosphere and that these flows will become turbulent. Flow velocities are estimated for the nondegenerate components of X-ray binaries of the HZ Her/Her X-1 type. It is concluded that nonuniform surface heating will not produce convection if radiative transfer dominates the photosphere and that such heating will not create favorable conditions for the generation and maintenance of strong magnetic fields.
