Scientific paper

Optical identification and X-ray powder study undertaken on hand specimens and polished thin sections of the Kirin meteorite shower and on the heavy fraction of minerals sorted from the Kirin No. 1 satellite have revealed 39 species of minerals in all, of which 26 are transparent and 13 opaque. Four stages are suggested for the formation and evolution of the Kirin meteorite: (1) fractionation and condensation of the solar nebula, (2) accretion of the parent body and its thermal metamorphism, (3) shock-metamorphism and breaking-up of the parent body, and (4) the falling process.
