Information on the size distribution and physical properties of interplanetary dust grains as inferred from space measurements, particularly of lunar microcraters, is interpreted in terms of two independent populations. Based on a study of published data for 256 microcraters, it is suggested that two families of interplanetary dust grains exist, with the larger grains (Population 1) having densities typical of silicates and the smaller grains (Population 2) having densities typical of metals. Other experimental data are cited which are also consistent with a two-component model of interplanetary dust. It is concluded that Population 1 probably originated in dust grains ejected by short-period comets and that the origin of Population 2 grains is uncertain.
