An energy principle is developed for the study of the MHD stability of a self-gravitating magnetized gas cloud in equilibrium. The energy-principle method of Bernstein et al. (1958) is extended to self-gravitating systems, and the existence of such an energy principle is demonstrated. A method is outlined for applying the energy principle to models of self-gravitating magnetized interstellar gas clouds in hydrostatic equilibrium.
