Spectrophotometric and polarimetric observations of the compact infrared source coincident with the OH source W33 A (G12.9-0.3) are reported. The spectrum of this object is dominated by extremely deep absorption features centered near 3 and 10 microns. The large apparent optical depths in these bands are used to test various sources of opacity which have been suggested to explain the features. The characteristics of this source are similar to those of the Becklin-Neugebauer object and W3(IRS 5) and suggest that it is an object or objects in an early phase of stellar evolution.
