Cross sections and/or effective collision strengths for the excitation of atomic nitrogen and nitrogen-like ions by electron impact are reviewed. The main sources of data are listed and the recommended data sources are selected for each ion. Cross sections are compared and shown on graphs. The recommended effective collision strengths are fitted to an analytic expression. The original data and the fitted function are displayed graphically for atomic nitrogen and Fe XX. The recommended fit parameters are tabulated.
