Two single-element designs are proposed for an infrared telescope intended to cover a field-of-view of 2.5 deg (diameter) at a speed of f/1.5. One design uses a single germanium lens that has an aspheric back surface; the other design employs a thin aspheric Mangin mirror made of germanium corrected for coma and spherical aberration. The performance of both single-element designs compares favorably with that of two-element systems. The main advantage of the single-element systems, asie from cost and complexity savings, is that they are alignment-insensitive. This feature insures performance stability over long periods of time and in adverse environments.
