The Hubble Space Telescope has made numerous observations of the core of the dense star cluster known as R136, in the Large Magellanic Cloud. HST observations before the HST First Servicing Mission include images obtained by the Faint Object Camera (1,2) and the Wide Field and Planetary Camera (3--5) as well as ultraviolet spectra by the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (6,7). Gorgeous new images of R136a were obtained by WFPC2 soon after the First Servicing Mission (8), and GHRS/COSTAR UV imagery and spectroscopy of individual stars in R136a is planned for early April 1994 (9--11). I will describe the results of these observations and their implications for the nature of young giant star clusters (``starbursts''). (1) G. Weigelt et al. 1991, Ap.
