An artificial magnetosphere was created in a vacuum chamber by the interaction of the supersonic super-Alfven flow of a collisionless plasma with a magnetic dipole. It is shown that a magnetic eddy, formed on the dayside owing to field line reconnection in the polar region, can decompose into a series of smaller magnetic islands. Simultaneous measurements with two magnetic probes were used to determine the characteristic scale of such structures.
