This winter marked an auspicious new beginning for the refurbished Hubble Telescope, including the successful installation and optical alignment of WFPC2. WFPC2 began scheduled GO and GTO observations in mid-January. Early results from many of these science programs are being presented elsewhere at this meeting. Here, a representative few are discussed to highlight science enabled by WFPC2 and the corrected HST, and to illustrate the prospects for new science in the coming year. While the instrument characteristics have been generally predictable from design and calibrations done prior to launch, we can now report our early on-orbit experience, particularly in the areas of optical performance, CCD characteristics in Hubble's particle radiation environment, WFPC2's far ultraviolet sensitivity and characteristics, and the general state of instrument calibration following six months of analysis by the WFPC2 IDT and the WFPC2 instrument scientists at the STScI.
