The role central configurations play in the analysis of n body systems is outlined. Empahsis is placed on collision orbits, expanding gravitational systems, and n body 'zero radial velocity' surfaces. Properties of central configurations are discussed, with emphasis placed on describing a different approach to analyze these configurations, which is related to the classical problem of the weighted sth mean values of a vector. This approach is illustrated by discussing the nondegeneracy of central configurations and by describing central configurations in various dimensions.
