The Effelsberg 100 m telescope has been used for the first time for observations at a wavelength of 7 mm. With an illumination taper of 19 dB at 60 m diameter the half-power beamwidth is 21 x 24 arc sec (az x el), and the aperture efficiency referred to the full geometrical area of the telescope is 12 plus or minus 2% for el of 45 deg corresponding to an effective area of 900 plus or minus 200 sq m, or 3.1 plus or minus 0.7 Jy/K. The aperture efficiency decreases approximately linearly with elevation below 45 deg, reaching a value of 8% at el of 20 deg. The pointing accuracy is better than 4 arc sec over several hours. The telescope performance is well behaved as long as differential heating by direct sunlight is avoided. Spectra of J 1 0 transitions of SiO from the supergiant VX Sgr are presented to illustrate the capabilities of the telescope.
