A study is made of the existence and properties of traveling density waves of finite amplitude in a model of a star system in the form of a thin layer with a two-step distribution function, which is an approximation of a large class of distribution functions of equilibrium states. The phase velocity and wavelength of the traveling density waves are found as functions of the amplitude. With increasing amplitude, the wavelength becomes shorter. The stability region on the wavelength-amplitude diagram becomes narrower with increasing phase velocity. The obtained star density waves are stable against fluctuations that give rise to the modulation instability.
