Limiting magnitudes of B = 21.5m-22.0m (direct) and B = 18.5m (1200 A/mm, continuum) are now regularly reached on IIIa-J emulsion with the 70 cm, f/3 meniscus telescope at the Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory, while the detection of objects with emission lines is possible to a significantly fainter limit depending on the line strength. Pilot search programs have revealed many spectroscopically peculiar objects, galactic as well as extragalactic, and an optical quasar search in the northern hemisphere is being initiated. The spectroscopic discovery (on IIIa-J and IIIa-F, 1200 A/mm) of ten new faint carbon stars in three fields in Cygnus is reported, and a parallel investigation has revealed more than 1000 Mc stars, a number of possible planetary nebulae, and several H alpha objects in these three fields.
