Observations of cometary ro-vibrational bands of the OH Meinel system in the region 9700-10200 A in comet P/Swift-Tuttle (1992t) are reported. Prompt emission from OH produced by water photodissociation is the most probable mechanism for excitation of these lines, but there remains a large discrepancy between the observed and theoretical intensities. Additional laboratory data on water dissociation and further cometary observations with higher spectral and spatial resolution are necessary to resolve the discrepancy
