Evolutionary aspects of patterns in galaxies are discussed with a starting point in numerical simulations. The meaning and existence of a varying pattern speed, here called feature velocity to distinguish it from the common use of the term, is investigated. The method for measuring pattern speeds by Tremaine & Weinberg (1984) is evaluated and a generalization of their method is presented.
