We present the first ^12^CO (J=1-0) observations of β Pictoris, the only star for which a protoplanetary disk has been observed in optical wavelengths also. The star and its circumstellar region does not present evidence of emission, down to T_rms_ = 10 mK. Our result confirms a similar ^12^CO deficiency found in previous studies on other stars with IR excess and with presumed protoplanetary disks or rings.
